Students get degrees after a 16-year legal fight in Nigeria

Sixteen years ago, Lanre Akinola completed academic requirements to receive a degree in statistics from the University of Ilorin. But Akinola had taken on extracurricular activities: protesting against military dictatorship and filthy dorms.

The University of Ilorin withheld his degree, and did the same two years later to Rasheedat Adesina, another protester.
Last month, 15 months after Nigeria's Supreme Court ruled that the withholding was "capricious, oppressive, illegal"- the university finally awarded Akinola and Adesina their degrees.

While Nigeria is now ruled by an elected, civilian government, universities continue to punish activists and conditions on campuses in Africa's most populous nation have reportedly gotten no better.
"Conditions have only changed for the worse," said Hassan Taiwo Soweto, national coordinator with the local Education Rights Campaign. He pointed to a recent protest at the University of Lagos, where students complained mattresses are infested with bed bugs and toilets are stopped up.
Akinola told The Associated Press that the university's actions hurt him. He had always wanted to be a statistician but could not get work without a degree.
"It was a struggle. I got by with help from family and friends," he said.
In 2006, he finally qualified with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, ICAN and now works for an accounting firm.

Japan's first commercial jet makes maiden flight

Japan's first commercial jet in 50 years made its maiden flight today, in a breakthrough for the country's long-held ambition to establish an aircraft industry that can compete with some of the major players in global aviation.

The Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) took off on a one-hour return flight from Nagoya Airport to test Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp's ability to bring the 100-seat class plane into service after three years of delays.
The unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which built the World War Two-era Zero fighter, is hoping the $47-million regional jet will help it oust Canada's Bombardier Inc as the world's second-biggest maker of smaller passenger jets behind Brazil's Embraer SA.
The MRJ is Japan's first commercial passenger aircraft since the 64-seat YS-11 entered service 50 years ago.
The first MRJ is slated for delivery in June 2017 to Japan's biggest carrier, ANA Holdings. Mitsubishi aims eventually to sell more than 2,000 aircraft in the competitive market segment.
So far it has secured 223 firm orders, most recently in January when Japan Airlines asked for 32 planes. The biggest single purchase, for 100 aircraft, was from U.S. regional airline operator Trans State Holdings.

Mitsubishi says the MRJ burns a fifth less fuel than aircraft of similar size, thanks to new-generation engines from Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp.
Japan's last attempt to establish itself as a commercial aircraft maker ended in failure. Production of the YS-11, built by a consortium that included Mitsubishi Heavy, finished after only 182 planes were built.
That program however helped Mitsubishi Heavy and other companies forge ties with Boeing Co, turning them into major suppliers and partners of the U.S. aircraft maker and helping revive an aerospace industry that was dismantled after World War Two.
Those Japanese companies build 35 percent of Boeing's advanced 787 carbon-composite jetliner, including the wings, the most complex part.
Japan's biggest carmaker, Toyota Motor Corp, and largest trading company, Mitsubishi Corp, each own a 10 percent stake in the MRJ venture.

Couple fatally shot in Philly while having sex in SUV

A man and woman found in a Philadelphia park fatally shot in an SUV were having sex in the back seat and their killer sought the couple out, police said.
Homicide Capt. James Clark said Monday that Shakoor Arline, 25, and Lisa Smith, 32, were together in the SUV early Friday when someone opened the rear door and fired nine times, shooting both multiple times in the head.

Maintenance workers found their bodies around 2 p.m. Friday near Lemon Hill Mansion, a historic building in the city's Fairmount Park. Clark said the shootings happened between midnight and 5 a.m.
Arline and Smith met at work at a previous job and had been seeing each other on and off for several years, Clark said. Both were also in relationships with other people.
"So obviously that's where our investigation is going to start, because somebody knew that they were in the park at that time and obviously had an issue with that," he said.
Clark said nothing was taken and the case was not a robbery.
"You've got nine shots fired, all of them head shots to both of the victims, so it appears to be very much a crime of passion," Clark said.
Investigators have talked to a woman and are trying to talk to a man, but don't consider him a person of interest at this point.

Premier League: More trouble for Mourinho as Chelsea lose to Stoke in his absence

Jose Mourinho's future at Chelsea was pushed further under the spotlight on Saturday when the manager, absent through a stadium ban, may have watched in solitary misery as the champions lost yet again at Stoke City.

On a day when Jamie Vardy kept his amazing scoring exploits going for Leicester City to help Claudio Ranieri's side join Manchester City and Arsenal on 25 points at the top of the Premier LeagIMG-20151108-WA000ue, the latest crisis for Mourinho still eclipsed all else.

The Portuguese had said his one-match suspension might force him to watch the match on a street corner on his iPad but, if media reports that he saw it at a nearby hotel are to be believed, Marko Arnautovic's 53rd-minute volley in Stoke's 1-0 home win will have made for wretched viewing.

It meant Mourinho was left surveying the wreckage of his worst-ever season in management, an unprecedented seventh league defeat in 12 matches being sealed by Arnautovic's acrobatic close-range effort.

Mourinho, who received the FA ban for making abusive comments to referee Jon Moss during last month's defeat at West Ham United, will have gone through agonies after Pedro hit the post with a curling shot as Chelsea piled on late pressure.

The defeat dropped Chelsea to fifth from bottom, astonishingly hovering three points above the relegation zone and placing further question marks over the manager's future at the club he led to championship glory just six months ago.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who was back at his former club Stoke on Saturday, said Mourinho remained the "right man" for Chelsea.

"We are behind the manager, you can see that from our performances," said Begovic. "His spirit and his presence is always there. We wanted to get a result for him."

Leicester became unlikely bedfellows with giants Manchester City and Arsenal at the top as Vardy hammered home a 65th-minute penalty to score for the ninth consecutive league match and secure a 2-1 victory over Watford.

Ranieri's Leicester are third on goal difference behind City and Arsenal who both play on Sunday.

Katy Perry named top-earning woman in music by Forbes magazine

Singer, Katy Perry is the highest-earning non-boxer on Forbes 2015 Celebrity top 100 list, thanks mostly to her Prismatic World Tour. Perry grossed more than $2 million per city over the course of 126 shows 75 of them overseas while pulling in an astounding $20 per head in merchandise sales. She also pads her coffers through deals with Coty, Claire's and Covergirl, and from a new Perry-themed mobile game due out soon which combined to earn her $135 million this year, tens of millions of dollars ahead of the rest of the women on the list.

“I am proud of my position as a boss, as a person that runs my own company,” Perry told Forbes. “I’m an entrepreneur… I don’t want to shy away from it. I actually want to kind of grab it by its balls.”

Taylor Swift earned the No. 2 spot on the list, nabbing $80 million. Her own tour, the 1989 World Tour, helped her cinch the high ranking, but couldn’t measure up to her rumored rival Perry’s haul. Her album “1989” sold more than 3.6 million copies and was the top release of 2014.

Top 10 female earners: 1. Katy Perry - $135 million 2. Taylor Swift - $80 million 3. Fleetwood Mac - $59.5 million 4. Lady Gaga - $59 million 5. Beyoncé - $54.5 million 6. Britney Spears - $31 million 7. Jennifer Lopez - $28.5 million 8. Miranda Lambert - $28.5 million 9. Mariah Carey - $27 million 10. Rihanna - $26 million

Quote of the day

A single talent is not a ticket to success in life. It must be nurtured on a daily basis. Give yourself a moment to appreciate what you’ve achieved, but no more. When the time comes to move forward, success is but a single point on a much longer journey - it is not the end of that journey. Imagine a company like Apple stopping after the iPod or Henry Ford deciding the Model T was good enough. Where would be today without people constantly striving to improve upon what they’ve already achieved?

All behind Mourinho: Chelsea captain Terry

John Terry insists the players must shoulder the blame for Chelsea’s disastrous start to the campaign and is adamant the dressing room is fully behind under-fire manager Jose Mourinho.
The Chelsea captain believes the responsibility for ending the club’s dismal start to the season lies with the players.
And he dismissed claims some players were no longer willing to fight for Mourinho as ridiculous, including weekend reports one unnamed player had said he would rather lose a game than win for the manager.
Terry, who will lead the side into the Champions League group game with Dinamo Kiev, said: “We’ve not played well enough, and we take that on the shoulders. We know where we are in the league and the Champions League group, and we know what we need to do to get out of it. That relies on us, as players, not the players.
“It’s going to take a dressing room that stays together, sticks together. What we’ve seen in the last two or three days, ridiculous stories about what’s happening within the club and the dressing room.
“I can assure you the players are 100 percent behind the manager. We are together. Anyone who has been at the last three or four games can see the way we’re playing is turning.
“We weren’t good enough at the beginning of the season, but things are on the turn. And we’ve been unlucky not to get one or two results. We will turn things around.
– Disappointment –
“Together is the most important thing: that we stay together in that dressing room.”
Referring to the claim a player has said he would rather lose a game, the centre-back added: “Listen, in my whole football career I’ve never heard a player come out with those words.
“In my whole career. Whether it’s been going bad or really bad. It’s ridiculous I have to sit here and talk about it.
“I’ve seen players’ faces with the disappointment after results, the feeling we’ve let the club and the manager and the fans down.
“The player wouldn’t be let out of the dressing room, let’s be honest. It wouldn’t go down too well, would it.”
Terry has seen a succession of managers leave during the Roman Abramovich-era at Stamford Bridge but insists Mourinho will not be leaving any time soon.
He said: “It’s not going to come to that. The club have shown faith in the best manager with the best history at this club.
“In all aspects, of all the managers I’ve worked with, he’s by far and a long, long way, the best I’ve worked with. We are going to turn it around. No ifs, no buts.
“I’m sure, and I’m adamant, that we’ll turn this around and he’ll be in charge for the rest of the season and long after I’ve finished playing for this club. He is the man to take this club forward to where we want to be.”
Terry made it clear Chelsea need Mourinho and Eden Hazard – linked with a move to Real Madrid following his dramatic loss of form this season – to remain at the club.
He said: “I’m not saying it’s different (to when other managers have been sacked) because results speak for themselves. The table doesn’t lie. We know where we are.”
Terry’s own form has been criticised but he made it clear that while he respected the views of some former players, he was unwilling to accept criticism from former Leicester and Wales midfielder Robbie Savage.
He said:” I’ve come under criticism, individually, from certain players and individuals, players I’ve looked up to and played alongside. I’ve taken that on the chin: Rio (Ferdinand), Carra (Jamie Carragher), (Gary) Neville, the very best I’ve come up against in the game. I take that on the chin.
“When others speak, maybe I don’t take it on the chin. When players have not had a career, played at a really bad level in their career… Robbie Savage being one.
“He’s dug me out a couple of times. You take it as a footballer, as an individual. I’ll take it from the Rios, Carraghers and Neville. All day long. From others? Nah.”

Ivory Coast’s Ouattara sworn in for second presidential term

Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara was sworn in Tuesday for a second five-year term after winning re-election in the nation’s first peaceful vote in more than a decade.
Senegal’s President Macky Sall, chief of the ECOWAS regional bloc, and Benin’s President Thomas Boni Yayi were among top officials watching as Ouattara, dressed in a dark suit, formally returned to power at a ceremony in Abidjan.
“I solemnly swear to respect and loyally defend the constitution, protect the rights and freedoms of the citizens, to conscientiously fulfil my duties in the best interest of the nation,” said 73-year-old Ouattara, his right hand raised.
“Let the people withdraw their trust and may I submit to the rigour of the law if I betray my oath.”
The former high-flying economist swept to victory in elections on October 25, cementing Ivory Coast’s return to stability after years of turbulence.
Ouattara’s first presidential win in 2010 triggered several months of bloodshed in which some 3,000 people died as his predecessor, strongman leader Laurent Gbagbo, refused to concede defeat.
Gbagbo was eventually defeated by pro-Ouattara forces, backed by the UN and France, and is now awaiting trial before the International Criminal Court in The Hague on charges of crimes against humanity.
This election, in contrast, was praised by observers as being generally smooth and peaceful, with the country’s Constitutional Council confirming Monday that Ouattara scooped 83.66 percent of the vote.
He solidly beat main opposition candidate Pascal Affi N’Guessan, who took 9.29 percent of the vote.

Future gloomy for Nigerian youths, says Gowon

A former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), on Saturday expressed concern over the spate of insecurity and corruption in the country, saying the future is gloomy for the youths.

The elder statesman, therefore, called for deep reflection by all citizens.

According to him, other issues such as moral decadence, sexual perversion and restiveness should equally pose serious concern to the citizens.

Gowon, who was represented by the National Secretary of Nigeria Prays, Evangelist Austin Kemie, spoke at the 25th anniversary of Scripture Union work in Abuja.

He stated that all citizens must rise to deal with the various issues of moral burdens in the educational institutions. He said there was the need to arrest the tide through massive prayer campaign and action.

Gowon said, “If we do not rise to bring our youths into the path of rectitude, then, their future prospects will appear gloomy and we cannot build a virile nation of trust, integrity and good governance.”

He also paid glowing tributes to the leadership of the SU, Abuja chapter, for labouring to impact godly values and virtues in people.

He said, “Today’s celebration calls us into deep reflection of our lost godly values and virtues, particularly as Christian men and women, and seek to recover them. This occasion must therefore compel us to reflect deeply on the state of our nation.”

The National Chairman of the SU, Ekpo Etim Ekpo, challenged members of the organisation to continue to reach out to the world with God’s word.

He called on Christians across the country to continue to be true ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

“No matter what you give and do, if the purpose is not winning soul, you are not winning,” he said.

I paid my brother N23m not to come out as gay — Fashanu

Nigeria’s ex-Super Eagles player, John Fashanu, has said he paid N23 million to his brother, Justin Fashanu, in order to prevent him from publicly announcing that he was gay.

The former Wimbledon striker made the confession a week after it emerged that two top footballers were planning to openly declare they are gay.

In his first in-depth interview about his brother, with the British newspaper, Daily Mirror, since his tragic suicide in 1998, Fashanu said, “I begged him. I threatened him. I did everything I could possibly do to try and stop him coming out. I gave him the money because I didn’t want the embarrassment for me or my family. Had he come out now, it would be a different ball game.

“There wouldn’t be an issue, but there was then. Things are different now. Now he’d be hailed a hero. I’ll never forget when Justin first told me. He called me in the evening time and said to me: ‘I’m gay’. Then he said to me: ‘I’m planning to go to a newspaper’. I said to him: ‘Oh heavens forbid… oh my God. We don’t need that. You’re mad’.”

According to the newspaper, the younger Fashanu requested for money to keep quiet about his homosexual status.

The older Fashanu said, “He promised when I gave him the money that he would not go out and say that. Two days later… bang… headlines in a newspaper. I looked like a sucker. For me and my family it was like Hiroshima or Nagasaki on our lives. It knocked us dead, it was a total shock.

“People might not like it, but I was trying to protect my family. You’ve got to remember the public’s perception of homosexuality at that time was that it was an abomination. It was taboo. Street boys were beating up gays in nightclubs. I give him credit for having the courage to come out and say it. But it caused a lot of confusion and animosity towards him, me, and my family.”

I'm not dead

Popular Nollywood Yoruba actor, Odunlade Adekola, on Saturday described as surprising the rumour that armed robbers stormed his home in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Friday night and killed him.

Social media platforms were awash with the rumour of his death on Saturday with his fans and lovers of Yoruba movies making enquiries to confirm the rumour.

Speaking with punch   correspondent on the phone, Adekola laughed heartily while refuting the claim, noting that he was shocked to hear the rumour of his death.

He said, “ I heard the rumour just the way everybody did. I was called by a friend on Saturday who told me that the rumour of my death was all over social media platforms especially Facebook. I later discovered that there is a Facebook page where the discussions took place with many persons making comments about my rumoured death.

“I do not own the Facebook account and do not know how it came about. My Facebook page does not allow for interaction. Fans and friends can only make comments on the pictures posted there. My Facebook account is Odunlade omo Adekola while my Instagram account is Odun omo Adekola.”

Asked if he knew why there was such a rumour about about him, the tall, talented role interpreter said, “Honestly, I do not know. I find it really surprising. I thank God Almighty God for continually keeping me. I also appreciate my fans both home and abroad for the love shown to me.”

In the past, another popular Nollywood Yoruba actor, Mr. Bolaji Amusan, otherwise called Mr. Latin, who is also based in Abeokuta, was rumoured dead.

Knowing the Difference between Your Needs and Your Wants

In order to manage your household finances and your budget properly, you must make sure that the most important things in your life—your needs—are taken care of before you begin to start to think about taking care of your wants. Sometimes, it is hard to tell the difference between needs and wants because certain things which were, at one time considered luxuries, are now today seen as needs.

Let’s define these words:
What are needs? Needs are things that you must have in order to survive. Your basic needs are food, clothing, and shelter, but can also include items which you must have to be able to make a living, such as reliable transportation to and from work, personal care expenses and electricity.
To find out if an item is a need or a want, stop and think about where that item stands in your life. If that item were taken away, would you be able to survive? Would you be able to provide for yourself or for your family?
Wants; on the other hand, are things that make life enjoyable but are not necessary for survival. Sometimes, it is easy to confuse wants with needs.
For example, you can tell yourself that it is okay to buy a bigger house than you can comfortably afford because shelter is a need. However, when you think about, you will probably see that a smaller house will fulfill your need for shelter —and also help you stay out of unnecessary debt!
The same is true for other items. Will a cheaper mobile phone allow you to make all the calls that you need to make? These are questions that you need to ask yourself and answer honestly before you spend money on things that you think are needs but are really just wants.
Now, this does not mean that it is wrong to spend money on wants?
No, it is not necessarily wrong to spend money on the things you want but may not need. In fact, the comfort and convenience of wants can add to your quality of life. But the reality is that not everybody’s income can cover all their wants, so choices have to be made – but those choices should be made only after all needs have been taken care of.
Knowing this important difference between needs and wants helps you to make the right decisions when a financial emergency arises. It will help you manage the cash that you and your family have available at any given time and give you true financial freedom.
